This was a virtual information session about the College of Arts and Sciences at American University, hosted by Joseph (Assistant Director of Admission) with presentations by Nuria Vilanova (Associate Dean of Undergrad Studies) and Valerie Renzahn (Co-Director of Advising). Nuria and Valerie provided an overview of the college's 19 departments across four disciplinary clusters (arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences), highlighting its 61 majors, 67 minors, and 25 certificates, with an average class size of 20 students and 400 full-time faculty. They discussed key features including experiential learning opportunities, research partnerships with institutions like NASA and NIH, study abroad programs in Madrid, Brussels, and Nairobi, and the new AU Ready pledge providing paid internships or research projects for students after completing 30 credits. The session covered admissions information including test-optional policies, demonstrated interest requirements, and the flexibility to complete double majors or minors across different schools. Students asked questions about specific opportunities in social sciences, clinical experiences, AI policies, and resources for low-income students, with Nuria and Valerie providing detailed responses about departmental partnerships, faculty mentorship, and available support services.
