The meeting was an informational session about the DC Community Impact Scholars program at American University, led by Dr. Amanda Harrison with student Abby Halderson and admissions rep Joseph Smieya. Amanda explained that the two-year program is a living-learning community focused on service, research, and community engagement in Washington, DC, with first-year courses, labs, and 40 hours of service, and a sophomore year spent on community-based research projects with local organizations. She described the program’s academic and social benefits, career readiness skills, and opportunities for certificates and further research. Abby and Joseph shared their personal experiences, highlighting the strong community, peer connections, and professional skills gained through service and research. The session included Q&A where they addressed topics like eligibility, majors, study abroad, internships, diversity, and the supportive environment at AU. The presenters emphasized the program’s selectivity, the importance of expressing genuine interest, and the lasting impact of the community beyond the two years.
