Good evening everyone thank you for joining us for our wise you consider early decision what are my name is going to Winsted this is. Versity a merrily we're with students lessons of a Ohio Michigan in the. Us northern New York go ahead and as over the very end so this is the system everyone my name is Marion Hollander and I am also an assistant director here in a you and I oversee the kind of the other parts of the Midwest the court doesn't have so Kansas Missouri Illinois Minnesota Wisconsin and then North and South Dakota as well and I will be in the human a.t.m. portions if you guys have questions about the whole process and it's not easy or anything else about you if you drop them it's you name will help you there into them they're into them aloud at the end of the session. Thank you very and William go ahead it's just so high I'm really I'm I am a current student at American University going into I'm in my junior year I am from Eastern Pennsylvania and I will be here to. Answer any questions about student life or anything like that that you might have. In my name is No I am means well I just finished my 1st master of muscle warrior yesterday afternoon and I. Will now also be here to answer questions. Barry thank you everyone for yourself we have a great piece Taishan and I so just about what will touch you and we'll we'll talk about road situation or silly action the advantages of my early decision is 0 for you also the bunt some myths about early decision and some key dates that you want to keep on your radar to look out for and like Marianne mentioned last it will wrap up with some q. and a to any questions that you might not have caught or position anything that we might not cover during the phone part of the presentation will be sure to take care of during that course. All right so just jump right into it so starting off with early decision versus early action what is really the difference there they sell super similar there is this one we're also what is different it's so early decision is a binding agreements if you are accepted you are committing to in rolling at that university that you applied early citizens So for instance with our presentation if you decided to a pyro decision with American University and you're accepted you're committing to enroll in American University as opposed to early action early action is a non-binding decision. When you receive you know if occasion that you've been and needed to that university you are not required to commit you simply receive your notification earlier almost gives you a little bit more time to decide when it's reversed if you are not at major universities we were only offering early decision which is the binding agreement and some of the Keep in mind too that we'll get into a little bit later with in our presentation with early decisions specifically at Mary University. We understand that you know you that is a commit and to apply or to enroll a you but we also want you to be aware of you know what your Islip actress looks like as well. So that you also get your Actually package you know when you get your misses letter so you know exactly walking into how much money he needs how much scholarships grants loans other financially you're a see you know before you know actually the minute you have a definition. All right so is early decision right for you or I'm sorry the earth advances there is so few vantages are really the few cation there is a smaller applicant pool which in turn increase your chances of her being emitted today you also get early registration for things like housing orientation as well as all courses so that way you get that big of a litter as far as one where you want to live and what classes you would say and a day for your station that you have in mind as well so couple advantages a little bit of a priority as far as students that do I really sit and so something to keep in mind there. Our aim now is ill incision right through you. So when you're faced with a question you know do I want to play with decision do I just want to apply really decision do I want to pyros ensue on some things that you might want to think about some things you might ask yourself is is a mind of one choice typically for siddhis that do fire early decision we do know with in somewhere within their application to the 1st statement either the the assessment so to say you know I missed a you somewhere along the lines they'll mention you know a used one choice I always want to go to a you as a typically will see students that fire in the city. Is their number one choice and also you know you want to review your possible financial aid options so be reaching out to the financial aid office ask them you know this is my situation what possible financially can I receive what options are there inquiring about you know any scholarships and grants that are out there that you can apply for keeping in mind you know looking out for the merit scholarships so these are some things that you want to look for when answering that question is early decision right for you. All right so some this of our early decision. You should not apply early decision if you have financial need that is something that you know is not true if you do need it if you have financially that does not mean he needs a wipe out early decision as an option when it comes to applying it is that is something that you want to keep in mind some of the u.s. cities are being that you are committing to the university so like I mentioned before you know you just want to reach out to the financially office find out where your financially options are start scouting out scholarships that you applied to things like that you still do have the opportunity to get financially when you apply really so even though you have financial the still know that you will get financially and that various of the next point there are fewer or other more merit scholarships available when you apply early. That's also false if you buy early decision Roe decision you are awarded you have the same amount of options when it comes to merit scholarships there's no priority when it comes to your viral Cision for scholarships like it is with Christie for house orientation or your fall classes you're on an equal playing field when it comes the mare scholarships. By early. If a you is your number one choice you should only apply early decision and also that is not true as well if a you is your number one choice you are not wired to early decision you won't hear any of us say you should apply or this is your number one choice honestly that is you want to apply early decision and. Again typically we just see more often that students that do apply early decision Eva is the number one choice and that's more so because it is a binding agreement so for cities that are that only going to a civically we will see them I really says it but if it is your number one choice you can absolutely apply a decision as well and also the early decision commitment is legally binding that is not true as well if you hire early decision that you are now you know Strat to enrolling in say you we do understand the situations have been there is a bit it's time between you know we made the decisions you early decision and versus when you get your. Family situation to change financial situations can change and you know we understand that if you do apply a good session and you are emitted as a girl and such an applicant please feel free let us know a change and you are able to afford a you or they might just not be the best choice for you right now. No And you know you are not. To that. So there is some place ability there and you are not you know. When it comes to applying early decision. All right so some deadlines even people who are we have early decision one that down on our impasse with no teeth but for any of you out there that didn't buy early decision one you can expect to hear that by December 31st. Decision to for those of you out there that are still the fence if you want to buy early Susan if you want to be right with a session you just not quite sure Sue is kind of extended that line per se for you know that 1st decision market just give you one more time so the deadline for this is it to him as you see here is January 15th and you hear that around February 15th so about a month you can expect to hear back if you applied for early it's you around. And of course in notes where you apply early decision or you can really decision we strongly ask that you complete your honestly documents at the same time that you see that your application for admission and say you especially with or the situation being again that realization is a binding agreement we want you all Sue understand and want you to know what financially what you're financially Backus looks like you know with scholarships and things so that way you're not committing to coming to a you but not knowing how much to have a how much I actually do have when you have the full picture when you come a view especially when it comes to early decision. The here is our concept information and if you have any questions you want to reach out to us want to stay in the know as spies you know what's going on within a few of the freedom social media reach out to us the e-mail and stay with us at all but that is it or our formal part of the presentation we can go ahead and jump into the Huon a portion. Answer any questions that might be out there. All. Thanks so much Courtney and I'm going to actually have our 2 students start out in this kind of share their early decision rationale kind of why they decided to play or the decision of what that process was like for them but for those of you the have questions start bring them in the q. and a and we will cover those things once our students are going to answer his 1st question to William concerning. Yes So. I applied early decision I did the one because I knew for a fact that I wanted to go to American University as my 1st choice in fact I didn't even apply to any other schools because I was waiting to get my decision from a year before applying rich also kind of went into why I did iti won because I wanted to know how about my admissions decision is since we get that back early for early decision that. I don't want to get that back early because I didn't want to start applying for other schools especially with application fees and all of that before I got my a huge decision. And yeah pretty much I knew you was the school I really wanted to go to so just applying early and sort of getting that out of the race so I knew that I could I knew if I would get accepted or not only played a big. It was a similar situation for me a you as my by far number one school and at least the way I viewed it whether it was true or not it was a little bit of a reach for me in terms of what you know my grades coming out of high score and I just really really wanted to go to you. Being a demonstrated interest school where the more interest you show the more tours and you know q. and a seminars like this that you go to the better chances your chances are I wanted to show that like a was that for me this is where I want to go and so that's and that's why I was in the decision. And we did a few questions but also the students are here to answer questions about anything so few questions outside of the early decision round the free throws in the q. and a as well according to be more of a question for you about how many students apply e.g. one versus each. Year muted. Court hearing that. We can hear me and what I will share Ok you're Ok. That I'm going to sorry guys so I actually just pull that up just here for early decision this past a woman we had around. A 1006 students apply for early decision. And that is a clue that that's inclusive of e.t. why and to. That grassroots basically from the information most of our students apply regular decision we do get a decent chunk of our incoming class from early decision but the majority of our students do apply breaking the decision versus one into this year is a very weird year with the pandemic overall in the Apply e.t.s. down pretty much a nationwide And so for us also our $81.00 deadline was was lower than typically is just with all the uncertainty finances being weird and all the things going on just totally understandable and totally make sense if you're thinking about applying early decision so let's cut it's this this year is a little bit of an anomaly in a lot of ways but specifically to our early decision. See is there is there different seconds rate between either you want to eat it's so from what I don't know where we calculate the exact this rate for such a clue or early 01 and sue the substrate for early decision in general is around 7 percent. Very high percentage yes but also keep in mind like a mission earlier in a visitation that it is a smaller applicant pool so though early decision does sound good no service level as far as I have a great chance of getting in. The mind of apathy applicant pool the smaller so don't let that be the reason that you apply early decision there are a number of different factors to consider by financially for instance when it comes to apply early decision. And there's a question I'm not 100 percent sure what it means is is there any effect in the results of playing 8182 I think that maybe means like does 8182 affect many chances of getting in potentially I think that kind of goes back to what no one is saying about demonstrated interest so applying early decision is like the ultimate way to demonstrate interest and you can see you're basically saying you know if you're an I'm in kind of bank and so that's how that's why the students there's a higher except in straights Similarly it's one Courtney was saying that's kind of I think that answers the question mental issue with them it's. A movie not just a couple of general questions can you apply to multiple special programs Yeah I can tackle that so absolutely apply to all her as if you want to so yes it surely invites multiples of programs. You I mean it's only one special program so that is something that even mine. You know when you do applied some of the progress so far as if you applied to the artist program and you applied to the 6 policy last dollars program you'll be a bit it's you either the artist program or politics and. His program typically I'll tell students you know if you are interested in multiple special programs but you might have one program that you prefer over the other with that one application for that program at your earliest and really sell it's a list that you know that is the one you want to be in so that way when the committee does make its always special programs with maybe 2 you're likely going to be more more likely admitted to the one that you. And if you're wondering what we're talking about when we're talking about special programs I just put the link in the chat to list of all the things that we offer including Honors College and the honors program as well as some of our 3 year programs and a reminder that that priority deadline is in just a few weeks on December 15th so those applications and if you do decide to apply a regular decision or $82.00 could potentially be due before your actual application to a year which is a little weird and kind of Corky but they're reviewed by 2 different committees 1st and then review kind of together so it's we are the kind of a mind to remember. Another question after receiving your decision how long do you have to make sure you want to commit a. Great question so you actually what you get your in this is letter is that letter it'll let you know the day that you need. Pretty much make your commit. For Last year I believe the date was June 17th that is not going to sell for this year but it will tell you in your letter when you have to commit buy it is no time like that's a bit within a month or you know a life. But that's when you have to or so that you're all by payment c.m. How does applying test optional influence your admission. Yeah that's a good question we get out alive so fine test optional I would really say benefits the student. There is no discouraging part as optional we are pass outs no we Julie just you know don't look for any test scores we don't hold that against a student that is optional we simply look at you know the transcript the rest of your application. And we just simply do not include the test poor as a part of your application typically out so students if you fill that year as it's erases he scored does not truly reflect your ability in the classroom go ahead in the process optional however if you do feel like you're standardized test score does supplement what you're seeing in the classroom then go ahead assume that that score. So back to William in no I'm too nice want to share what kind of clubs and organizations and anything else you do on campus typically on campus or right now remotely. Yes So. I'm a part of the ambassador program which is the group of students that take you on tours and sort of represent the university at events like this. Unfortunately we can't do toys on campus I wish I really wish we could because I missed doing that but yeah. And then there's also a lot of political base clubs obviously with a you being a really big school for politics there is a college Democrats a college Republicans we also have international affairs societies that I was a member of. I'm also a member of the Democrats. And I'm also I also joined the band of course an orchestra at American University and one of the nice things about that is that you do not have to be a music student or a member of the College of Arts and Sciences to participate in a music ensemble on its program or anything like that any student at a you can join the official music ensembles that the College of Arts and Sciences offices so. Yes So for me so I'm also in Basterds Obviously it's our present here I'm also a staff writer for the undergrad law review on my right and the education column and then educational and then as well I do hello and a bond with a you or at a you know and then I do some intermural sports so we've got like I I did something or mere old indoor soccer in a Merrill saw like slow pitch softball and then enter to water polo shirt all tons of fun and it's literally was just like all the people from my floor freshman year we got a team together and like honestly I don't think we want to single game in any of the sports like we just there was a it's all just kind of messing around as a lot of fun. And I think that's all I've been involved in so far yeah and you know it's going to tab out dorm life and kind of what that looks like living on campus in campus and it's on then. Yeah so. A couple months after you get your decision of whether or not you made it into a you and not you will be emailed to I believe you official a student e-mail when you get that you will be emailed a link to take a crit is the ambassadors sort of like to call it that you home any roommate quiz where you get paired up with your roommate in a basically asking a bunch of questions like What time do you normally go to bed what time do you like to wake up. How clean do you like your room what temperature do you like your room and that peers you up with your roommate so you can also if you know someone who is. Coming to a year with you in the same class as you you can put in their name on the cribs and if they put in your name is fair or you automatically be paired but other than that. You know taking their careers is how I got my roommate and we're actually going to be getting an apartment together so the craze usually does a really good job of pairing up you with someone who will best. Who you'll be best at living great together. In terms of housing and stuff like that we have the traditional style residence halls Rich Anderson and Centennial I mean so innocent and let's we also have sort of jack in jail bathroom kind of dorm rooms rich is. You and your roommate in one room and then you have a bathroom that is connected to and know that 2 people in a different moon. And. $99.00 times out of 10. You will be paired with you'll be sharing their own. Rooms for someone of your same gender or someone with the same sex as you the person in the jack and you will also usually have the same gender as you especially if you put in the form that you wish to be paired with someone that is the same sex as you there's also an option to go coed which again is in the form it's in the critters that you take if you are too picky about your roommate or suite mates if you you know Jack and Jill being the same gender as you. Also for females we do offer a female only housing on campus however we do not offer male only housing there is no male only gone dorm building and that is simply because there's not really that much demand for it but. If there is a lot of demand for male only housing then I'm sure the university will create in the comedy. For my housing for freshman year I went completely random I just led a huge shoes and my room in egg got along fine we cohabit it to the other and then when the semester ended smushed ended and we went on our way is. That as far as like floor like kind of dorm life so I was and let's all and my dorm was super clear my floor I'm sorry was super close like my r.a. would hold. Events every Monday where we would have like cookies and tea and kind of relax like the kind of preparing for the rest of the week stuff like that and we would hold like we had a there's a good kind of like a dining table set up in the on each floor in the communal space and my r.a. bought us like ping pong and we would like play ping pong tournaments on our floor and so like 1000 of my floor was very close and we all did the intermural stuff together so late throughout the year you know the people on your floor typically are random but you just get very close at them because you all you know are living together and sharing a lot of the same spaces and stuff like that and so a lot of my really close friends now it just happened that we are paired like they lived across the hall where they lived around the corner from inside that. Concert was really great. All right thanks you guys a couple questions I think from the special programs kind of topic when asked what does the private debt I mean and so the prior deadline mean for special programs is just kind of scan of like e.t. It's like your super excited it's just kind of the and national deadline the hard deadline on all those leaders January 15th correct me if I'm wrong Courtney Ok so which means all of that location for everything having to do with a you that final final deadline is January 15th but that very deadline of December 15th means you'll be the 1st ones to be reviewed you know fresh eyes getting excited about reviewing all the files for the honors program or whatever it is you're interested in and so it just kind of allows you to be the 1st on the list to kind of show your real interest in those different programs. And then additionally some acid acceptance rate for regular decision is interim to a little over 30 percent of women as a 31 percent last year we get about $20000.00 applications and last year we get a little over 20000 for our undergrad class so it's a lot for a street view so that definitely you can imagine to fit a class at the size that we take. What we have to say no to a lot of students which sucks but that's kind of what the process is with you. I did see another stupid question. Where you go yeah what do you know and William what specifically about a you kind of compared to some of the other universities help you decide that was the right school for you and commit to going early decision. So you can start with one so yes I'm. So I am from like I said from central Ohio from a bit of like a rural ish area you know we had like we're outside of Columbus Ohio but we also I take your tractor to school but I still like you bit of both and so for me One is I really am and politics and political science and just knew that I wanted to be in a city school in Washington d.c. because I was like you know the Penacoli of where it was and for me with a you like it just you know it has its own campus it has like its little bubble kind of inside of d.c. but it's kind of insulated from some elite the hustle and bustle of downtown which really appealed to me and then cited I toured most of the d.c. schools and really it was just about all kind of it just felt right like I just kind of like it's kind of hard to quantify like it had all the programs I wanted and stuff like that but then I just stepped on campus like for my tour and for the overnights of like that and it just like it really felt like I took an overnight. With a you and with them the ambassadors program and the guy who hosted me and up becoming like a guy I was friends with last year when I got on the campus because he just had a really great experience he was super nice and everything like that so it all just kind of cook together with like you know the programs and everything that I was looking for in the place I was looking for plus just like a great feel. Yes So going off of what he said just the whole campus atmosphere you know it when you go to school in a city. Especially one like d.c. having your own separate campus that's sort of the feel separated from the main city itself yet easily accessible to the rest of the city is really amazing I grew up just. About an hour outside of Philadelphia in the Philly suburbs so the whole sort of separated atmosphere where you're in d.c. but you don't feel in this city and you don't get caught up in the city was a big plus as well as the fact that students I believe. We were the 1st I'm not sure if we're still the only but they're one of the few d.c. universities that offered metro passes to their students so big perk is that as an a student you get a metro pass and you can go anywhere in the District of Columbia and the greater d.c. metro area for. I've been told not to say free because it's included interaction but at the point of view using Get you don't have to pay for it and then. Just be knowledgeable professors and you know I wish we were on campus and we're allowed to bring students into classes and stuff but. Now you know just sitting in classes with professors sitting and actually was interacting with all the professors and everything and you get the feeling that they know pretty much everything there is to know about the subject they're teaching and they are extremely passionate about that subject and they are passionate about teaching you everything they can about that subject and just the whole atmosphere of you know they are there too they are experts in their field and they are there to teach you. Real impact made me want to go to a hero I think things and I know for some of the seniors which is probably most to be there on the session many frustrating to hear like I chose a you because I'm mystified on campus it felt right because right now you guys Carol is there for this and we want to totally respect that I know that's frustrating I did struggling for the admissions counselor service if you don't know who your admissions rep is definitely them up and get in touch if there's some way we can help you whether that set you up to chat with one with one of our ambassadors to help you get a better feel for the campus in the community a you we want to do everything we can to secure host your campus right now we're hoping to maybe next semester but that's still up in the air as everything is so we are sensitive that you know that's a frustration that you guys have about your culture to process. So another great question. And I think knows anyone here to listen that's as I heard a you doesn't have school pride So how does that affect students or is that their. Yeah so I think I mean I live like right in the o.s.u. Buckeyes bubble like right so like when you're looking at like a Big 10 school or something like that it's not going to be the same like pride and sort of like your it's athletics though it is we still like to go to our. Basketball games and soccer games and the like the but I think the school pride really comes in just a different form like my friends and I instead of like going until getting a football game are like getting ready to go down there and making signs and going downtown for the when it's March or stuff like that so it's like pride in your school but it's in a different way it's in like kind of representing yourself in your school's values or what you believe in like in a different way versus like going to a football game or going to you know about game itself like that so it's just it's not that there isn't pride and ego and isn't pride in the school but it's just it's kind of it manifests itself in a different way it's very well played No I think you. Some And I've seen asked him how do you a you students interact with politicians in d.c. both as a part of the university and independently. Yes. You know interactions with politicians is going to be as much or as little as you want it to be so I know a few people that attend a you that aren't really that big into politics and there is definitely a good chunk of the student population that you know doesn't it's not that they don't pay attention but they're not as interested into it and they don't really care about you know meeting politicians and everything like that so they don't go out. And interact with them all that much and you know that's Ok with them and then there are others that want to be as involved with politicians and interact with as many as them as possible and one of the biggest raise at a you to do that is taking an internship of course being in d.c. that opens a lot of opportunities to take internships during the school year and sort of interact working for a politician rather that be a member of congress member of the u.s. Senate or in the right house or any government agency really that you want to interact with just take an internship and that's a really good way to get to know them we also have a lot of politicians coming to campus through speakers Union so we just recently had Simone Sanders on who is going to be in Joe Biden's I believe his press agent his press one of his press secretary is in that department so that's. Going to be that was nice to be able to hear from her we also had current and former secretaries. And current and former members of Congress I actually got to meet current congressmen both khana and have a sort of 10 on one chat with him richer is really nice and you know just going to a bunch of events and interacting with politicians it really is what you make of it so you can either stick back and not interact with them at all would go to every event that they attack and go you go out and work for them and everything and you know it's what you make of it. Like to build on the kind of like a story that you know along with this like about just politicians being on campus. It was one day I was in my freshman year so last year I was like we're running late somewhere and like I just like was kind of running around the corner and like literally smacked into the former prime minister of Poland like and like he like when we ended up like sitting and talking for a couple minutes and like you say guys we're both very apologetic and everything but it was just like you know there's a lot of politicians and like people not just from us but all over the cut all of the world. That will be on campus again or you know giving talks and stuff like that and then on top of that when I was independently from the school so this is something that I do and my friends will do sometimes is like and it doesn't work as much currently but as you've seen from politicians they really like to talk about themselves and so what I will do is just e-mail people that like I think are really cool. They might not be necessarily like the biggest names they might not even technically be an elected official but in an apartment or something and all this like e-mail them and be like hey look at really love to just hear about how you got to where you are and wind up being able to meet because you know we all live in d.c. you know to meet for coffee or you know recently have been having a couple zoom calls with some people. Over on you know some of them cause where we get coffee and just talk and stuff like that and so that's something that's really great about being in d.c. is like how close you are like I mentioned I'm really into education policy in education law and so there's a think tank downtown in d.c. that I really like and I reached out to the head of their education policy section and just we met for we met of resume and just how to be you know a cup of coffee and we're able to chat it's a like that but you know they were just down the street and so there's a lot of opportunities like that where as you can reach out or they're just tons of the events going on all over d.c. And you know a bit of a normal time where you can just meet people hear them talk you know hear their stories and. You know rethink guys so for you Courtney we have one question about what is considered a 1st generation students and when you're buying it how does that affect the admissions process if it doesn't. Yeah so a you 1st generous a student consider it no secret that comes from the family where no one prior to that is going to college and or as going to college but did not receive. As far as you know how is that that the review process or the of this process. Really does a just give us more contacts when it comes to reviewing the city's applications so for example. If you know of universe areas and something that we like to see or service the patients or their transcripts is that they're taking over his course of that they're taking our 1st classes or a.p. or ib classes. In this case you know the student may understand that it's taking courses like that looks good. On the side of college admission so we'll take that into account also something that we track is demonstrated interest and you know for sehri still might not understand the importance or how going to 11 are like this you know those well in your favor when we're reviewing your application so we don't hold that against the student and you know mentioning that it's for the campus visit 11 hours because they might have a resource or you know someone let them know you know these are things these are steps that you wanted to say when you're applying to the school years. Right think you know and specifically for you and this soon is also from outside of Columbus and just curious the transition from being in a small town to being in d.c. wouldn't surprise you and really you can chime in here as well just kind of it was the advice to you about transitioning to college from further away. So I mean like one of the biggest things for me it was like in where I'm from like 5 o'clock like everybody's just kind of done with their day like it just things are kind of like over like it's a big thing like you know taking naps like at the you know you're done with work and so you're just going to go lay about for an hour or something like It's very like it's a slower and so that was definitely a bit of a transition being like like it just there's always there's always going on like it's always there's always something happening and there's always maybe not to say right now but again you know there's always things to go to or there's always. But really like you know the best advice I can get you give us just like keep you know keep going to things like keep you know putting yourself out there and going to different meetings or different leg things in the city and if you're the only one of your friends that wants to go and serve like that because that's the easiest way to like get used to kind of the environment and also just like get old like no more things about d.c. you know my I mean a very big foodie and like love like traveling all over Ohio trying to find new food but there's not a ton here and so you know that was the best part really about getting to d.c. has been like there's like a 1001 different like places to eat and things to try and stuff like that and so my friends and I would set aside you know $20.00 a week where we could go on Saturday nights and I would be our one meal hour and we would go and find like an Ethiopian restaurant or an Afghan grill or like you know an underground ramen restaurant or just stuff like that like kind of acclimate ourselves to you know new cultures and new parts of you know d.c. and parts of the world really that many of us had never experienced. That I don't know if we covered this or if we did get the story in Athens but if you guys want to hear what you're studying and maybe what you want to do you after graduation Yes So I'm studying Clara which for those of you who don't know is a unique degree to a you it's an interdisciplinary degree that covers communications in our economics and the government sort of all wrapped into one and I'm also double majoring in Political Science. Because you know when you're taking Kate it's really easy to just tack on a double major that is related to one of the 4 fields that played covers. And then I'm also in the process of enrolling in the School of Public Affairs is combined bachelor's master's program and if I get in I will be pursuing a master in public administration so when I graduate in about a year and a half I will be getting a bachelor's in Clayton poly side with a Masters in Public Administration already attached to that. So I am doing a double major in political science and religious studies focusing on doing a in side of political science focusing on comparative politics and then inside of religious studies focusing on globalisation and hopefully kind of look at religion and politics kind of all over the world and kind of stuff like that but much of the chagrin I think my advisers and my parents and especially my grandparents I'm not really sure kind of the direction that's going to go I've been really looking at law school as recently and stuff like that but as well one of my teachers one of my professors wants to go to like South Asia and do some like study programs like some research projects and a couple years and it's like been trying to offer to teach in Chinese recently you know in his spare time so like I'm not really sure exactly where I'm going but honestly I just decided to choose the things that interest me the most and money I took there is they can call habits of mind in a you which is kind of like some of your general kind of requirements for a liberal arts school where you have to try classes in different areas and for one of my requirements I took a class called religious heritage of the West so I was looking at people like Christianity Islam and Judaism and through that that's kind of how I got religious that it is like it wasn't something I had even really thought about until I just randomly but because and you know when I talk with the dean of religious studies department of once a month. And so that's kind of you know I'm not really sure what kind of direction I'm going but I just take the classes that seem the most interesting and side of the areas that I like and until eventually I'll find a career. I think we're so sure you'll find something. So yeah a couple questions a excerpt about imagery and interest one is have an express or demonstrate interest and then also get into or does that count to demonstrate interest is when you come to events like this they have to be a you like official events so right now going to 2 or injury you're going to canvas and doing itself at it 2 or walking around we can count that as demonstrate interest because we are officially hosting you and don't really have a way to there that's what you did but at this point. Is because you're attending this event right now you'll get the Madrid interest plenty of other webinars information sessions anything like that that we end up hosting a preview a few days which are also online right now. Are how you can get more interest. In the wm So if you want to answer and you have many opportunities or what have you find opportunities to work on campus especially paperwork. Yes So there's sort of 2 ways you can go about it the 1st way is through the career center that we have so if you go and talk to the Korea Center which you can reach online you can just Google making university career center and their informational pop up you can talk to Career advisers and there's also career student ambassadors is that they'll help you find jobs and anything like that both on and off campus as well as like preparing your resume and drafting a cover that has since you know all of the jobs that you will most likely apply for both on campus and off campus will require you to do that. They also hold events rare different employers this is more off campus but different employers will come in and you can interact with them from like interest groups like the Council on Foreign Relations and Kate I mean a bunch of interest groups 2 government agencies like the State Department and the f.b.i. 2. Companies dealing with news media so Politico Washington Post came on campus. So that's a good way to find off campus and on campus jobs to the Korea center and then also there is a website called a you could be is rich you might have to do a bit of digging to find but you can probably navigate through it through they could be a center absent as well and that will bring up a list of all campus positions available so if you go on the bad side if you create an account which you should have as an a student if you get in and then just it will just bring up a list of every single job whether that's federal work study or not that has the opportunity for you to work in and you just apply through there and it's really nice because if you apply for multiple jobs it keeps your information from one job to another and you can go in and apply for as many on campus jobs as you want. Thank you. Couple more quick questions very different your interest how do you track it we take it into everything that we do that in person or not in our kind of system at tracks in awards points for if we say yes you came someone asked if you get like danger lose points if you don't know you don't you know just if you show up and that's when you get the points and it's not it's very low on the list as far as things that we're looking at we are looking at all the other things as far as he is navigate your essay your g.p.a. test your piece of many of layers of record all those things so it's a very small part of the whole review process just as a way for you to tell us I'm super interested. Ok so I'm happy with the students is one last question before we head out I did also put the link to our tour which is a You Tube series of You Tube videos of our 2 were of can best influence have all the dorky tourguide jokes and things like that that you might miss if you're trying to just look at pictures online a minute segment is even this kind of pick the parts of campus you want to hear about and they're short of videos you have to listen to like an hour long video but it's one more way we're trying to help you guys get 1000 of what it's like on campus but for you will even know what some of your favorite traditions that you have attended there are excited to get back to answer back on campus. One came particularly in handy. And I am missing out on the share is like the midnight scream that they do during midterm and finals weeks where everybody goes on the quad and just for like one straight minute just like screams of the top there longs and then just goes back to work and so that's a particularly good one. I enjoy and really wish we had right now. On top of that there is something off founders ball which is a really cool event that a you does every year during founders week where they they go rent out like a Smithsonian and have like this whole gala thing just for students and that was a lot of fun to attend last year. Yes So the midnight Screecher is definitely one of my favorites if we were on campus it would have been held this Friday. Or I defy their Saturday they wreak before finals we all just go out and scream and just let off some steam before we have to go in and take all of the final exams. And the founders ball is another one of my favorites. To bring in a new one night monumental especially at the beginning of the school year almost every organization year they will be on campus will host a night monumental event so basically it's a group of people that just sign up with different organizations like you Dems hosts one aid college Democrats host one a bunch of religious or stations like you have well and a bunch of others host their own and. If you go in I mean. If you sign up for one year old dad. At a spot on campus in the next day just go and take the Metro into town in New York go around with a group of a your students and go to all the monuments on the National Mall and around it and everything like that which was really nice because you know when you normally look at pictures and everything you see Dyck the Washington monument during the day and the Lincoln Memorial Day and the day and everything but the city is extremely beautiful during the night they lighting is absolutely amazing it's it's a bit like did Disneyworld lighting with lighting up all the monuments and everything so that was another one of my favorites that I will be participating again next next year if hopefully we go back. There is one more I forgot about to that era post and welcome week every year. And go drag Bindo and that is always like be biggest event like that anyone can go to like they be entire jam is full of people and they're literally just their life and go and like when prizes and it's not like that but it is so much fun and like I thought my entire floor like the line when we went on like my entire floor went all together in like a lion started like from the from the gym and wrapped around like the whole of campus like everybody was trying to get in like it is the biggest thing and it's like in the 1st like week on campus and it is it is it is a sight to see that is for sure. Well those deathly Salai really unclear that. You know where they are is that next year you will him in l.a. and all this it is us will be able to take part in the you know give out the scream case and bank. Online essays really fun stuff you guys can all look for it soon there on the web with us to day and we're looking looking like we're getting at the top of the hour so I swear it's a chance and thank you all for logging in some night with us for a bit of an r. if we did and gets and have your questions please feel free to use that link at Mary invention we can contacts who you are in this stuff as it is and please reach out sue us ask us any questions that you have such a bill that really sit with us so that way when we are reading your application and either be easy to or at least sit we can put you know a name Sue about a face that's fairly but we can recognize your name really your application you know yeah remember so. You know and a great recommendation for use you. But with that said I will offer it's a night and have a good one and if you guys want to reach out to student ambassadors for more questions about student life you can do that through the website as well and you can e-mail students and go one on one conversations and for my dad to answer more like nitty gritty questions about what it's like when we're all back on campus Absolutely thanks. Are you guys how can I.
